Venue profiles matter more than team identity for captain selection. H2H (head-to-head): low variance. Win or lose - no scale. If you have edge, consistent 55% win rate compounds. If no edge, consistent 45% loss rate erodes bankroll. Best for skill-confident players.

Variance tells you how much individual outcomes scatter around the mean. A high-variance player might score 0 some matches and 100 others; a low-variance player might score 35-45 most matches.
For captain selection: high variance + positive edge = best long-term outcomes. The 100-point captain game is better than the 40-point safe captain game if both have positive edge, because the upside compounds over time.
For contest selection: low variance contests work better with smaller edges; high variance contests need bigger edges. Most players underestimate variance until they lose 5 contests in a row despite having positive edge.

Public ownership percentages on fantasy platforms show which players are owned by what percentage of teams. Reading these helps you build differential teams when you want to.
High ownership (40%+): consensus picks. Picking them gives you no differentiation in mega contests but matches field average in small contests.
Medium ownership (15-40%): popular but not consensus. Some differentiation. Safe-ish.
